York police charge six in auto insurance fraud
On June 23, investigators with the York Regional Police Major Fraud Unit arrested and charged six suspects after an investigation into a staged auto accident in the City of Vaughan, Ontario.
Police say that in November 2009, two of the suspects attended the York Regional Police Collision Reporting Centre and told officers that they had been in a car accident. Each individual said they were the only occupants in their vehicles at the time.
Police say that after reporting the incident, each suspect contacted their respective insurance companies and claimed that they had passengers in their vehicles at the time of the accident and everyone involved had been injured. The insurance companies contacted the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) and another investigation was started.
In March, IBC turned their findings over to the Major Fraud Unit of the York Regional Police. On June 21 and June 22, six suspects were arrested without incident.
Charged are:
- Thevamalar Theivendran, 52, of Toronto
- Gowrinath Theivendran, 20, of Toronto
- Mustafa Mohamed, 33, of Toronto
- Sinnathamby Balasubramaniam, 56, of Toronto
- Navanantheni Balasubramaniam, 48, of Toronto
- Mahad ALI, 32, of Toronto
for charges including:
- Fraud Over $5,000
- Public Mischief
- Obstruct Peace Officer
- Conspiracy to Commit and Indictable Offence
- Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
The suspects were released from custody and will appear in court on July 28, 2011.
