Winnipeg Jets licence plates coming to Manitoba hockey fans
After waiting fifteen years for their National Hockey League team to return, Winnipeg Jets fans across Manitoba will soon be able to show their support for the team on their vehicle.
Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger announced that Winnipeg Jet-branded specialty licence plates will be available to fans on Monday, December 12.
Administered by Manitoba Public Insurance, the plates will cost $70. Thirty dollars of that fee will be going to the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation.
“Manitobans love their Jets and are proud to support them,” said Selinger. “This will be yet another way to celebrate the return of our NHL team while contributing to local organizations that do great work to help our young people succeed.”
“We are very excited to make these license plates available to the public as a means of showing their support for the Winnipeg Jets and the True North Foundation,” said Winnipeg Jets chairman and governor Mark Chipman. “This provides a great opportunity for hockey fans across Manitoba to show their passion for the Jets while assisting our foundation’s continuing mandate to support numerous initiatives across our community.”
Hockey fans will be able to visit any of Manitoba’s more than 300 Autopac agents to place their orders and receive their plates.
The Winnipeg Jets plate is the third specialty plate issued by the province. In 2004, Manitoba approved the issuing of a specialty licence plate to honour veterans. Earlier this year, fans of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were also able to purchase specialty plates.
For the die-hard Manitoba sports fans, MPI said drivers don’t have to decide between supporting their football team and their hockey team. “Fans who own a Winnipeg Blue Bombers licence plate are still eligible to purchase the new Winnipeg Jets plates. You can even change the plates in between seasons at no extra charge. That means you can use your Blue Bombers plates during football season and your Jets plates during hockey season,” said the insurer. “However, because the plate numbers on the front and rear of your vehicle must match at all times, you will not be allowed to use the Blue Bombers plate and the Jets plate simultaneously (i.e. you cannot have a Jets plate on the front of your vehicle and a Bombers plate on the rear).”
