Sun Life CEO Stewart retiring in November

Donald A. Stewart, Chief Executive Officer at Sun Life Financial, is retiring on November 30, 2011. Stewart is also retiring from the Sun Life Board of Directors, in accordance with company policy.

Stewart, a native of Scotland, joined Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada in London, England in 1969 and emigrated to Montreal three years later. In 1974, he left the company to work as a consultant, to return again in 1980. In 1998, he was appointed as Chief Executive Officer.

Succeeding Stewart in the role of CEO and President of Sun Life Financial on December 1, 2011 is Dean A. Connor, currently Chief Operating Officer. Connor has also been appointed as President and a member of the Board of Directors.

The Board also announced the appointment of James H. Sutcliffe, FIA as Chairman effective December 1, 2011. Mr. Sutcliffe joined the Board in 2009 following a career in international financial services. He is currently Chairman of the Company’s Risk Review Committee. Ronald Osborne will step down as Chairman effective November 30, 2011 and retire as a Director at the 2012 annual meeting. Osborne has served in various capacities since joining the Board in 1989 and has been Chairman since 2005.
