Road Safety for Children

Schools across the country are in session so it’s no surprise that child safety stories have been some of ILSTV’s most popular this week.

On Wednesday, we told you about a report from Manitoba Public Insurance which said that children aged five to 14 make up the majority of school-aged pedestrians injured in that province.

Barb left her comments on this story, saying that the onus should be on the parents to teach road safety for children and to look both ways before crossing the street. Barb wondered what happened to Elmer the Safety Elephant, the lovable Canada Safety Council who has shared information with kids for decades.

Elmer’s still around teaching road safety for children, but he is getting older. Elmer the Safety Elephant was born in 1947. That year, his impact was dramatic. Traffic collisions among Toronto children dropped an astonishing 44 per cent – even though vehicle registrations increased by 10 per cent.
