Report Impaired Drivers program starts in Regina
The public is being asked to help make Regina streets safer with a road safety program called Report Impaired Drivers (RID).
RID encourages Regina residents to call 911 and report suspected impaired drivers to the police.
“Drinking and driving is the number one contributing factor in fatal collisions in Saskatchewan,” Minister Responsible for SGI Tim McMillan said. “RID empowers the public to help Regina law enforcement in removing impaired drivers from our roads. It also serves as a warning that there are many eyes on the lookout for anyone driving under the influence.”
The RID program is a partnership led by SGI, the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) and the Regina Police Service with support from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Students Against Drinking and Driving and Rawlco Radio.
The RID program was piloted in Saskatoon in March 2010. Since then, Saskatoon law enforcement has received over 1,050 calls, resulting in 71 impaired driving charges being laid.
“We strongly support this initiative and appreciate our long-standing partnership with SGI which makes this possible,” said Regina Police Chief Troy Hagen. “We believe members of the public want to be engaged in solutions to the problem of impaired driving and we welcome the RID program as one more step toward achieving the goal of enhanced safety on Saskatchewan roadways.”
It is recommended that drivers pull over safely to the side of the road before dialing, or have a passenger make the 911 call.
