RCMP charge Ontario man with fraud in Employment Insurance scam
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s (RCMP) Greater Toronto Area Commercial Crime Section has charged an Ajax man with fraud offences relating to falsified Records of Employment and false applications for Employment Insurance benefits.
In September, 2010, Service Canada referred a case to the RCMP identifying approximately 300 people in the GTA who had received Employment Insurance benefits to which they were not entitled. The case was uncovered by ServiceCanada during regular program reviews.
Police allege the accused issued hundreds of falsified Service Canada Record of Employment forms used to fraudulently apply for Employment Insurance benefits resulting in a significant fraud against the Government of Canada.
Ramanan Rajagopal, 34, of Ajax, Ontario is charged with Fraud over $5,000 and Use, Trafficking or Possession of Forged Documents. He is scheduled to appear at Scarborough’s Provincial Court of Justice on December 14, 2011.
“This investigation represents the commitment of the RCMP to working with our valuable Government partners such as Service Canada, with a common goal to preserve the integrity of Government programs and the economy as a whole,” said Inspector Rick Whattam, the Officer in Charge of the GTA Commercial Crime Section.
