New N.B. premier follows through on promise to review $2,500 injury cap

New Brunswick’s new Conservative government is taking a promised second look at the province’s $2,500 cap on soft-tissue awards for accident victims.

Premier David Alward has ordered a working group to ensure that current legislation governing awards to those hurt in traffic accidents “is fair and reasonable.

He says the goal is to ensure the system in place “is fair, accessible and affordable for all New Brunswickers.”

Alward pledged during the recent election campaign to begin a review of the cap within three months of his election.

The working group will consult with New Brunswickers, consumer groups, legal professionals, the insurance industry and other stakeholders about the cap and the legal definition of soft-tissue injury under the Insurance Act.

The legislation was enacted in 2003 by a previous Conservative government to curb skyrocketing auto insurance rates.
