Home inspector ruled negligent; must pay
A BC home inspector must pay nearly $200,000 to his clients, who were told that the home they wanted to buy needed only basic repairs.
A BC Supreme Court Judge ruled that home inspector Imre Toth was negligent because he did not inspect the entire home, telling the buyers that the $1.1 million house needed about $20,000 in repairs.
In the end, the actual cost of repairs to the North Vancouver home was over $210,000.
The couple signed an agreement with Toth that limited the inspector’s liability to the cost of his service, which was $450.
The judgment said that another inspector found water weeping from a wooden beam that he easily sunk his knife into, along with several cases of fungus growing.
Toth is a member of the Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors (BC), a self-regulating association that licenses its members.
