Golf Tournament to raise money for WICC
Narrator: On Tuesday, August 21, 2012 Onside Restoration is hosting their annual WICC (Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade) BC Golf Tournament and Fun Raiser at the Westwood Golf and Country Club in Coquitlam. Kerri Brown of On Side and her team of industry volunteers have been involved in the tournament since 2007, and have raised over $123,000! Kerri Brown is the marketing director at On Side and the tournament organizer. She explains the tag line in the official invitation that states, ‘Something for Everyone’.
Kerri Brown: I started adding that to the actual invite because for the longest time individuals didn’t know that men could play. Because it’s WICC: Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade. So we started writing ‘Something for Everyone’, males and females alike to kind of tackle that one component of the misperception, if you will, that was out there. Ever since we started doing that we started getting a little bit more male participation and word got around.
It’s kind of two-fold. That was the first part. The second part is the way that we raise money on the day of the tournament is a little unique. We don’t run a silent auction. Instead, what we do is create three, themed raffles, of which upon arrival and registration the golfers have the ability to purchase a ticket—one for twenty dollars, or six for a hundred dollars—where they can then put them into one of the themed raffles, or all. So they might purchase six tickets and decide to split them up or put them all in one. And in that way, if they want to participate the minimum is twenty dollars, or they can go up from there. But we found that is successful because sometimes with those silent auctions the minimum can be quite high and you’re often quickly outbid. So this way we usually manage to raise between $7,500.00 and $9,000.00 the night of.
My goal every year has just been to surpass the previous year. And last year we raised $27,689.00. So my goal, I always stretch because I like that nice round number of $30,000.00, but realistically it’s been tight times for a lot of people in our industry, so I’m happy just to meet or surpass it.
