The Canadian Independent Adjusters’ Association’s annual conference gets under way this Thursday in Victoria, BC. We spoke to Allan Hart, the Conference Chairman, to see what’ s in store for this year’s delegates.

Allan Hart: We’ve got an excellent education component. We’ve got eight or nine different speakers. We’ve got tours of the largest construction project in North America right now, which is the uptown mall. And we’ve got dinner at Butchart Gardens and tours, a bunch of stuff planned; a trade show. It should be great. We’ve got a lot of people participating.

Planning really started about a year ago, and probably six months ago we went into full steam ahead. But almost a year ago we needed to decide where the event was going to be held, organize the hotel and then book the hotel, and from there get together with the various committee members and plan the events and the locations throughout the day.

The organization, the CIAA, is a group of adjusters from all across Canada. It’s the only organization of its kind in Canada, and the only chance that all the adjusters from competing firms and firms that aren’t  really competing – there’s camaraderie, but it also lets us have a sounding board and talk about issues that affect us all. And the issues that are happening on the East coast may be relevant to the West coast, so it can give us some insight into what’s happening in the industry.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Rolling Up Our Sleeves On Indemnity”. And, according to Allan, the reason they chose this theme is simple.

Allan Hart: Basically the CIAA’s commitment to controlling indemnity through superior adjusting. Overall we’re just trying to improve our organization’s image.

The CIAA conference runs from August 26 to 29 in Victoria, BC.
