At 10:20am PST today, thousands of British Columbians will ‘Drop, Cover, and Hold On’ in the largest earthquake drill in Canadian history, known as The Great British Columbia ShakeOut.
The event, to be held annually on this date, marks the anniversary of the last magnitude 9 earthquake in British Columbia that occurred back in 1700.
That event, known as the Cascadia earthquake, shook the Juan de Fuca plate from mid Vancouver Island to Northern California, caused a 1000 kilometer fault rupture, and triggered a major tsunami that hit the coast of Japan.
