Alberta collision damage reporting threshold increases

The amount of total property damage requiring a motorist to report a vehicle collision to a peace officer in Alberta has risen from $1,000 to $2,000, effective January 1, 2011.

Collision reporting thresholds are set through the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators in co-operation with all Canadian jurisdictions. This ensures comparability of statistics across Canada and allows for a better analysis of trends affecting traffic safety. Alberta joins Quebec which has already raised their limit to $2,000.

In Alberta, along with total property damage of $2,000 or more (as of January 1, 2011), any collision that results in a fatality or personal injury must also be reported to police.
