A necessary evil: parking costs

Like it or not, commuting is a way of life now. Most of us have to travel to get to work and a lot of us are using our vehicles to get there. (The 2006 Census found that in 72.3% of us drove to work, and 11% took public transit.)

But, plugging quarters into a parking meter may not cut it anymore, especially if you’re in many of the world’s city centres.

According to a Colliers International study of parking, monthly parking rates in Canada increased by $20.00, a robust 9.9 per cent over 2008 levels. The average daily parking rate in Canada rose 9.89 per cent over last year to $17.78 daily, with an average monthly parking rate of $222.75, up 9.94 per cent from 2008. This is in stark contrast to south of the border where average monthly prices fell just 0.9 per cent.

In Canada, the parking situation looks like this:

Seems a bit silly doesn’t it? Can you imagine paying an extra mortgage so you can…pay..your…mortgage? I’ll stick with the bus. And not in Abu Dhabi. Ouch.

  2. Samantha says:

What about charging for bike parking? It can be downright dangerous trying to run the gauntlet of bikes thrown every which way in the front of some buildings. I say let’s build bike parkades and charge for parking there.

Our office is located downtown, which is convenient for most people, except for the parking situation. We are lucky that we live in a city with reasonable parking rates, but the lack of parking spaces is almost laughable. Sometimes we can see our clients circling the block again and again, just waiting for a parking space to open up.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind paying an extra buck if I knew I had a chance of finding a space.
Public transport in our area, sadly, is not an option.
