The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia has added a policy to its Corporate Policy Guide, saying that employees cannot consume alcohol during the workday, even if it’s on an unpaid meal break.
According to a copy of the memo obtained by the Vancouver Sun newspaper, prior authorization from a Vice President is now required before alcohol can be provided at an ICBC sponsored event. The same advance OK is also required for the purchase of alcohol with company resources.
The memo includes an FAQ with questions like “Can I go for drinks with my colleagues after work?” The answer from ICBC is “Yes, except during travel for company business, at Corporate Sponsored, or Related Events, the policy does not apply after working hours.”
The Canadian Office and Professional Employees local 378 union which represents unionized ICBC employees says that it doesn’t object to a policy that ensures union members aren’t under the influence while at work, but says it’s a concern that this policy intrudes on employee’s private time.
