List of Canada’s Green 30 organizations
The list of Canada’s "Green 30" – organizations whose employees are most positive about their record on environmental stewardship – was just released by Hewitt Associates.
The list was compiled from employee feedback using Hewitt’s Employee Green Index, which focuses on employers’ strategies, activities and efforts to minimize the environmental impact of their operations, products and services.
The Co-operators and Co-operators Life Insurance Company were both named to the top thirty. The Co-operators says the company has been transforming its operations over the past few years through its "sustainability journey." This has included reviewing operations in all of its subsidiary companies to improve the environmental, economic and social impacts it has in Canadian communities. Insurance products and services with sustainability attributes have been created, including hybrid vehicle discounts and environmentally responsible home policy endorsements. Paper usage has been reduced, and corporate office buildings are being retrofitted to improve energy efficiency. The fleet of 400 company vehicles has been overhauled to introduce more fuel-efficient models, including hybrid vehicles, and efforts are being made to reduce travel. Overall, The Co-operators has achieved a 12 per cent reduction in its measured greenhouse gas emissions compared to the baseline year of 2007.
Vancity Credit Union was also named as one of the Green 30. Vancity has been active in green issues for years. In 2006, the company set a goal to be carbon neutral by 2010. It reached its goal – two years ahead of schedule. As of December 31, 2007, Vancity Credit Union is officially a carbon-neutral organization. Vancity has also been working to further green banking options, provide community investments and grants for environmental projects, and more.
