The Manitoba government is moving to prevent criminals from using body armour and armoured vehicles.

The NDP government has tabled a bill that would require anyone buying outer protection to get a permit, unless they were a police officer or corrections guard. People who sell body armour would need a provincial license.

The proposed law would also forbid people from installing armour, bulletproof glass or other measures on a vehicle. Penalties for either offence would be as high as $10,000 and three months in jail.

The Alberta government recently introduced similar legislation, saying the move sends a message that gang activity will not be tolerated.
